Jewish Community Federation Creates Cemetery Database

February 12, 2010 at 11:23 am | Posted in Press Releases | Leave a comment

The Jewish Community Federation’s Commission on Cemetery Preservation has compiled a database of approximately 85,000 people buried at 14 Cleveland area Jewish cemeteries and two cemeteries that have Jewish sections. The project was initiated several years ago when Marilyn Bedol was the chair of the Federation’s Commission on Cemetery Preservation, and has been completed under the current chair, Jeff Gottlieb.

Records from synagogues, funeral homes and other sources have been researched, merged and organized with the assistance of many volunteers with an interest in genealogy.  In some cases, handwritten notes or microfiche were transcribed to create a record.  It is estimated that this centralized database contains the names of 90% of the Jewish burials in Cleveland.  Updates will be continuous.  This enormous project was funded by a grant from the Commission on Cemetery Preservation’s supporting foundation of the Federation and other supporting foundations of the Federation.

For information or to locate the Cleveland burial site of a specific person, contact Susan Hyman, Federation’s Information & Referral Specialist, at 216.344.3511 or shyman@jcfcleve.org.
