CLEVELANDERS COMMEMORATE THE HOLOCAUST – To Save a Life is to Save the World: 65th Anniversary of Liberation

Who: Holocaust survivors and their families will participate in the ceremony.  The event is free and open to the entire community.  Typically, about 700 people assemble for this event.

What: The annual community commemoration of Yom Hashoa V’Hagvura, Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day, recognizes Holocaust survivors and their families.  This year will focus on the 65th Anniversary of Liberation and honoring World War II veterans who risked their lives to save others.  The program is coordinated by Kol Israel Foundation, Sisterhood and Generations; and The Mandel Jewish Community Center of Cleveland; with support from the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland.  It is co-sponsored by area agencies, organizations, congregations and individuals.

When: Sunday, April 11, 2010, 2 p.m.

Where: The Temple-Tifereth Israel, University Circle at Silver Park, 1855 Ansel Road, Cleveland

Why: Yom Hashoa V’Hagvura or Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day, is often known simply as Yom Hashoa.  This day commemorates the six million Jews who died during the Holocaust.  It also marks the anniversary of the heroic Warsaw Ghetto uprising of 1943.  Jews around the world hold memorials and vigils, where they often light candles and read the names of families and communities who perished.

More than 220 young Jewish professionals from across the continent will convene this weekend in Boston, with Cleveland’s own Bradley Sherman chairing, for the 2010 National Young Leadership conference of The Jewish Federations of North America. Top volunteers and Young Leadership professionals from 50 Jewish communities will develop leadership skills, identify personal and community visions, and explore ways to engage and inspire others.

The Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio and Siegal College present:

Living Voices: Through the Eyes of a Friend

 An interactive performance highlighting a watershed moment in time, Through the Eyes of a Friend is told from the point of view of a fictional best friend of Anne Frank.  Sarah is a composite character inspired by the experiences and testimonies of many individuals who knew Anne Frank, as well as other young people who experienced the Holocaust throughout Europe.

This performance takes place on Thursday, March 11, 7:00 PM at Siegal College, 26500 Shaker Blvd., Beachwood.  It is free and open to the community and appropriate for middle and high school students as well as adults.
