National Council of Jewish Women, Cleveland Section to Receive Zehman Volunteer Award

Cathleen Schine, international best-selling novelist and author of The Three Weissmanns of Westport, will be featured at the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland’s Women’s Division spring luncheon on Monday, May 3, 2010, 11:45 a.m. – 1:45 p.m., at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven, 6111 Landerhaven Drive, Mayfield Heights. Schine’s wit and insightful views of people and the world they inhabit has endeared her to readers across the globe. Schine has written for The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books and Family Circle. She is the author of seven novels, and lives in New York City and Venice, California.

Another highlight of the Women’s Division event will be the presentation of the Irene Zehman Volunteer Award to National Council of Jewish Women, Cleveland Section.  For over 115 years, NCJW has been a powerful force for social change across the country, around the globe – and right here in Cleveland. Representing the oldest Jewish women’s organization in North America, NCJW members step forward when others retreat, speak out when others are silent and champion the needs of women, children and families. From school literacy programs to senior life-enrichment, from voter registration to the NCJW/Montefiore Hospice Project, NCJW volunteers can be found at the leading edge of progressive social issues.

The Irene Zehman Volunteer Award was established by her daughters, Judith Z. Sherman and Roslyn Z. Wolf, both of blessed memory. The award was created to recognize a woman, a group of women, or a women’s organization whose efforts demonstrate the highest ideals and practices of volunteer services.

The Women’s Division spring luncheon recognizes and thanks women who make an annual gift to the Campaign for Jewish Needs. The cost of the afternoon is $36 per person (not tax-deductible). Copies of the speaker’s book will be available for purchase and signing. Nancy K. Levin is chair of the Women’s Committee. Event chairs are Zehava Galun and Ellen Zelman. For reservations or more information, call 216.566.9200, ext. 220, e-mail or visit

The Women’s Division of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland connects and involves women from throughout the community in the work of the Federation, prepares and promotes women into positions of leadership within the Federation and the community, and plays a leading role in supporting the annual Campaign for Jewish Needs and empowering women as philanthropists.
