Beginning mid-March, the Jewish Federation of Cleveland will launch a full scale study to estimate the size, geographic distribution, socio-economic, religious and cultural attributes of the area’s Jewish population.  Randomly selected community members will be called to participate in the 2011 Greater Cleveland Jewish Population Study by completing an 18 minute phone survey.  Information gleaned from this study will inform efforts to meet community needs.

“This is an opportunity to learn about our Jewish community,” said Enid Rosenberg, Chair of the Federation’s Community Planning Committee.  “We urge everyone who is called to take the time to complete the survey.  The greater the participation in this study, the better we can plan for the evolving needs of our community.”

Every 10 – 15 years, the Jewish Federation of Cleveland undertakes a thorough study of the Greater Cleveland Jewish community.  The last study was conducted in 1996.

“The 1996 study enabled the Federation and our local partner agencies to respond effectively to the needs of our community members,” said Rosenberg.  “We are planning to use the upcoming study to inform our efforts to strengthen the Jewish community in a multitude of ways including engaging families with young children, supporting our older adults and attracting and maintaining members of the Jewish community in Greater Cleveland.”

Phone surveys for the 2011 Greater Cleveland Jewish Population Study are slated for mid-March through June.  The study will include a telephone survey of 1,000 Jewish households in the Greater Cleveland area and for the first time will also include calls to cellular phones to help better reach a diversity of respondents.

Researchers will be talking to the entire spectrum of the Jewish community including those already involved in Jewish life, as well as those who are not.  General community households will be called as well, to help researchers estimate the incidence of Jewish households in the general population.

The research study is being conducted by the professional research firm, Jewish Policy and Action Research (JPAR).  JPAR is an alliance between Ukeles Associates, Inc. and Social Science Research Solutions, which together have conducted over 20 similar Jewish community population studies, including recent or current studies in Baltimore, New York and Chicago.

Results of the population study will be made available to individuals and organizations wishing to use it to advance their planning.  Results should be finalized and published by early 2012.
