The “Mikvah Ladies” received the Irene Zehman Volunteer Award at the Jewish Federation of Cleveland‘s annual Women’s Spring Luncheon on Tuesday, May 3, 2011.  A mikvah is a spiritual purification and cleansing bath.  The “Mikvah Ladies,” Lee Apple, Sandy Berkowitz, Mina Saidel and Karen Wine, are volunteers who act as the shomeret (witness) during immersions at the Charlotte Goldberg Community Mikvah.  The Volunteer Award was established in 1980 in memory of Irene Zehman by her daughters, Judith Z. Sherman and Roslyn Z. Wolf, both of blessed memory.  The award recognizes a woman, a group of women, or a women’s organization whose efforts demonstrate the highest ideals and practices of volunteer service.

In addition to their assistance with immersions, the “Mikvah Ladies” also educate individuals and groups about the proper and meaningful uses of the mikvah, create a variety of ceremonies for women, and serve as informal friends, confidants and mothers for women using the mikvah.  In addition, all four of the women volunteer extensively throughout the community.

The Women’s Philanthropy Initiative of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland connects and involves women from throughout the community in the work of the Federation, prepares and promotes women into positions of leadership within the Federation and the community, and plays a leading role in supporting the annual Campaign for Jewish Needs and empowering women as philanthropists.
